===MILITARY ORGANIZATION===
Every province is responsible for providing their own troops under the leadership of the Khan, although there is no such as liege allegiance. Field armies (//ordu//) are organized in terms of myriads or tumens (10 000 men). Each tumen is commanded by a //tarkhan//, who are often given the task to administer spesific conquered territories. Most of the army is made of light horse and infantry, with a nucleus of heavy cavalry reserved for the decisive charge.
Variag army is highly professional. Promotion is mainly based on merit. Each unit leader is responsible for the preparedness of his soldiers at any time and would be replaced if this is found lacking. On the march each tumen would lead its own herd of remounts and each cavalryman would have at least three spare horses. If it is not needed on the battlefield, the Variag artillery remains behind the army with the engineers, the reserves and the herd of remounts. Artillery train includes heavy catapults, incendiary bombs, smoke bombs and rockets made of bamboo wrapped in leather.

Additions:
Hosts of [[Khand]] are armed with slings, spears, javelins, bows and axes. Small one-handed axes are very popular in the cavalry as a substitutes to the expensive two-handed cavalry swords, when footsoldiers usually rely on sturdy two-handed battle axes. Horse archers and camel riders are armed with small composite bows with large, box-like quivers which can carry as many as sixty arrows. Straight double-edged swords of western form are preferred, but majority of Khandish blades are single-edged haradan exports.

Additions:
Lamellar is the typical armour of these regions, usually of hardened leather. Standing variag armies make a large-scale use of scale cuirasses and pointed metal helmets. As might be expected in regions dominated by cavalry, the horse-harness of variag steppe peoples are highly developed and often very decorative. Lamellar horse-armour is usually reserved for élite troops, but is very common among the ruling Ito clan. Udo clan is known for their beautiful bronze lamelles.
